Haley - Easy Rider Dog

Posted June 27th, 2008 at 03:53 AM by Garage Logician
It was early November when she came into our lives. A mere 10 1/2 pounds of scruffy, dirty and poorly treated Shi-Tsu saved from dodging cars on a busy arterial street. It just happens the person that saved her is Janice's department head and a friend. So we agreed to take her and give her a home. She was pretty quiet at first, didn't know what toys were, didn't know how to play and even refused treats. That didn't last long. She loves treats and playing and has toys galore including her own cats. We soon decided Haley is a good name. From November to now Haley has totally captured our hearts.

One thing she loves above all else is going for rides. With warmer weather you can see her with head out the window and hair flowing back giving an aerodynamic look. We say she has ADDS (AeroDynamic Dog Syndrome). So since riding is one of her "favorites" we decided she would probably like riding on the motorcycle also. A canvas kennel/carrier with sturdy frame was found at "Wallow World" (yeah I know) and I spent time in my "men's crisis center" making a base from materials already in possession. A couple weeks ago I took her around the immediate neighborhood and all seemed fine. Then again I didn't get above 20 to 25 MPH so it was something less than an all around test.

My original design required tools to fasten to the motorcycle luggage rack and likewise tools when removing it. I concluded that was not a desirable design so set about doing refinements. Well, today the project came to fruition and I took Haley for a longer ride at higher speeds. The circuit I took gave us at least 3 to 4 miles and speeds up to 50 MPH. When we got back home Haley was reclining comfortably in her kennel and required a bit of coaxing to get her out, she was ready for more cruising.
