Allan, I beg to differ... unless something has changed, admin (I'm not sure about mods) DO have the ability to give reputation as frequently as they want to...
and... you do understand the use of quotation marks as indicating a tongue in cheek remark, don't you? if not... maybe I should have used the term "joke alert"
I'm a full-fledged admin and I have to spread it around.
Um, reputation I mean, not that stuff that entered into everyone's mind first. I really wouldn't sling monkey poo all around. I'm MUCH more selective than that! (joke alert)
I know that I have not been able to use the reputation button because I have to "Spread some around before I can give XXXXX more reputation" or some thing to that effect. So all I have done is tried to use the quote button to state I agree or disagree to a post.
I can't give any rep to Russ or S2K or many others. I think it is a neat feature to give a quick thumbs up or down but other then that is not that important is it? Does the person getting the rep get anything for them?

Charles
I think they get green dots at the bottom of the page on the left side. Ask April about that, she seems to really like them. Almost as much as chocolate, from what I gather.
The rep system is a bit limited as you point out. However, I am not aware of anyway to "beat" the program and override the "spread 'em" directive. It may be that Jan did find a way when she was on the admin team, but I am not aware of it. Doesn't seem that important to me, since I am not shy about voicing (typing?) my opinion.
Could be there is a way to "reset" it, but I think I would probably destroy the forum looking for it. Pretty clumsy that way. It's an ape thing.
Russ is correct ... reputation is what contributes to the 'green dots' and is a quick way for other members to guage how much to accept what they are reading. For example - if the opposite thing is said by two members, one of those members with a very high reputation (ie lots of dots) and the other has little or no reputation, which member is more likely to be believed?
The reputation feature of vB is a very powerful tool and been coded very carefully to ensure it is not abusable.

So the same rules for sharing the reputation around apply to forum members and admins/mods alike?
